Saving the lives of our youngest patient
Every year around 10,000 babies from across the East Midlands are born at Nottingham’s hospitals, and 10% of these will require Neonatal care, which can be a devastating time for new parents.

Nottingham Hospitals Charity is still raising money towards a piece of research equipment that we have funded, which we hope...will lead to fewer ca...ses of brain damage and death during childbirth, and fewer babies requiring Neonatal care.

The new early warning system is being tested at Nottingham’s City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre. If the system tested in the INFANT Study is effective, it will be rolled out across the country. We hope this will lead to fewer babies suffering from brain damage and death during childbirth, and more happy, healthy families.

Information about our 4D Scans

3D scans are still images “pictures” of your baby in three dimensions, 4D scans are moving 3D images of the baby in “REAL TIME” The images show the outside of the baby rather than the more familiar 2D images which show an outline of the baby with the internal organs visible. 2D scans are used to date your pregnancy and check all is well with baby. In 4D scanning we use 2D ultrasound to position baby ready for 4D, and also to sex baby, as 4D is not reliable in sexing.

The best time to have a 3D or 4D scan is between 25 and 30 weeks. Before 25 weeks your baby is very tiny and has very little fat under the skin. . After 30 weeks babies head may be very low down in your pelvis, so you might not be able to see all of babies face.

Good 4D imaging is dependent on babies’ position, the amount of fluid in front of face, location of placenta, hands/feet or cord in front of babies face. We always expect baby to have a hand/cord to the mouth as even babies in the womb get comfort from suckling on hands and fingers, umbilical cord flouts wherever there is a pocket of fluid, most babies love the pulsation of cord and will often be seen pushing their faces into it. Breech babies are especially hard to scan as head will be up and bottom down in your pelvis leaving nowhere for babies’ legs to go but up and over the head. Maternal size can sometimes interfere with imaging of the face; these factors are unpredictable at the time of scanning despite using state of the art equipment and the best practice of our highly trained sonographers. If the babies face is completely hidden throughout the session, we will repeat your 4D scan at no additional charge on another day.

Please be assured that all our Accredited Sonographers are highly trained in 4D ultrasound and our 4D Baby Scan Studio is one of only a few in the East and West Midlands that are Registered with the “CARE QUALITY COMMISTION” . This is your guarantee that your scan is being performed by qualified sonographers in a safe and regulated environment, and that all rules and regulations are being followed for yours and babies safety.
