There are benefits to all the scans but from a medical point of view these benefits are limited in the 3-D and 4-D scans. There may be occasions where they can be useful in giving information about some sorts of known abnormality. As the medical benefits are limited it is unlikely that the 4-D scans will replace the traditional 2-D dating & anomaly scan in the near future.
The 3D 4D scans use the same technology as the more traditional 2D ultrasound scans but do not take a single image and instead they take multiple images which are processed quickly in a powerful computer to create the 3-D image that is projected to you.
As such, they are just as safe as the traditional 2D scans that have been used to scan pregnant women for 30 years and there is still no evidence to suggest that they cause harm to either mum or baby.
